Action Club Billboard

“Change” has been the keyword of the Barack Obama campaign but a Republican activist group has unveiled a new billboard campaign, using Obama’s infamous word to their advantage. Starting this week, The Action Club of Buncombe County is introducing a series of billboards throughout the Asheville metro area. One encourages voters to “Change the Culture of Corruption in North Carolina” by voting Republican. Another invites voters who want a woman in the White House to vote Republican this year.

“As voters go to the polls to vote for ‘change,’ I hope they will remember that the Democrats are currently in control of Raleigh and have been for more years than many of us have been alive,” says Kathie Lack, president of The Action Club.  “In North Carolina, change will mean voting Republican: The voters needs to know that the high taxes, corruption scandals and gridlock we face in North Carolina aren’t coming from Republicans.”

Democrats have controlled the North Carolina legislature and governor’s office for the past eight years and presently control the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners and the Asheville City Council. The Action Club hopes their new campaign will bring change in Western North Carolina as well as Raleigh.

About The Action Club of Buncombe County:

The Action Club actively works year-round to elect qualified Republican candidates to local and state offices; and actively works year-round to effect policy changes which are in keeping with their belief system as it relates to government. Qualified Republican candidates means candidates who wish to uphold and protect the United States and North Carolina Constitutions. It means those who exhibit honesty and integrity and who have the strength of character to speak out against behavior and practices that are harmful to the structure of our country as it was intended by our Founding Fathers. Policy changes which are in keeping with our belief system as it relates to government means strict adherence to the United States and North Carolina Constitutions. This means less government and less government interference. This means strict accountability of all those holding public office and/or receiving public funds.

Joe DunnJoe Dunn, former Asheville City Council Member, wrote the following letter, regarding statements made by Commission Chairman candidate David Gannt (D):

David Gantt’s statement before the League of Women Voters that he was responsible for the merging of the city/county 911 system is a complete misrepresentation of the truth and ignores the facts.

For two very hard years, Nathan Ramsey and I worked hard to try to achieve a merger that was opposed by city and county beaurocrats, some law enforcement officials, and politicians.

My task was to go against the city manager’s idea to have seperate 911 systems, a mayor, and city council that was not interested in providing better safety and quicker response time in emergency situations which could save lives and property.

At no time did David Gantt ever call me for information or offer any help.

After a long and bitter fight with the city manager and members of council, I was able to get the measure supported by a majority on city council against the wishes of the city manager(Jim Westbrook). The council, however, would not fund the project. This was political in itself as the idea was that Ramsey and Dunn’s issue would die for lack of funding.

The issue would have died had Nathan Ramsey not pushed the commission hard to provide funding for the entire project. This was not an easy task as he is usually outnumbered on many issues he brings forward to the commission.

David Gantt was never part of any work behind the scenes or offered any help.

Another issue that begs to be heard is the hearings behind closed doors concerning the water fight between the city and county.  Gantt was the most hostile commissioner present in finding a solution. Members of his own party on the city council with me were amazed at his position and attitude. I know this for a fact because I was there during all the debate.

If Gantt really cares about taxpayers, saving property, and good law enforcement, why did he not try to make the 911 system work better during his eight years on commission?

The taxpayers of Asheville and Buncombe county are being ill served as long as the politicians on both sides continue to fight over turf and power.

Dr Joe Dunn

The Buncombe County Republican Party will submit complaints to the Buncombe County Board of Elections at their meeting on Friday over the appearance of impropriety at early voting locations. The organization objects to the distribution of James Taylor concert tickets at several polling locations in Buncombe County during the same hours as early voting, as advertised in the Citizen-Times. The concert was advertised as supporting Senator Barack Obama, candidate for President. On Wednesday, party officials and local citizens urged the Buncombe County Board of Elections to request that the North Carolina Board of Elections and the District Attorney investigate whether or not actual vote-buying took place.

“With the recent concerns over possible voter fraud surrounding ACORN, as well as complaints from within the Democratic Party itself over election issues, we should all be hyper-vigilant about following election laws. Bribing voters with concert tickets is an appalling abuse of our election process,” says Dr. Timothy Johnson, Chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party. “Fair elections are the foundation of our freedom and our representative government. We will protect the integrity of our elections at all costs.”

The Board of Elections meeting will be held on Friday, October 24, at 6:00 PM.

We have heard a couple of reports that legitimate voters have been removed from the voter rolls for unknown reasons. Luckily, same-day registration is allowed during early voting only. Voting early at the one-stop voting locations is as easy as can be. Locations are listed below.

Remember, if you choose to vote a straight party ticket, that vote does not include the race for president or any of the non-partisan races on the back of the paper ballot. As the ballot states, “You may select a Straight Party AND ALSO vote for a candidate of a a different party in any individual office.” Take your “Alaskan Gold” slate card (available at our downtown Headquarters at 46 Haywood St. Suite 222) with you to remind you of your non-partisan choices.

This is from a couple of  weeks ago, but is still worth sharing. The Democratic candidate for governor shows some real arrogance and disrespect toward those who choose any path other than getting a 4-year college degree. You can read more about Mayor Pat McCrory, Republican candidate for Governor, on his website at www.patmccrory.com. This article is from the North Carolina Republican Party:

Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue has already offended blue collar workers across North Carolina this month by suggesting that Pat McCrory’s plan to expand vocational training at North Carolina’s high schools and community colleges “harkens back to the old low expectations.” (WRAL Debate, 9/9/08)

On Friday, Beverly Perdue discussed the current economic crisis with the Greenville Daily Reflector. “North Carolinians can take comfort in knowing the major banks that make North Carolina their base of operations are stable, she said.” (Burns, Bobby, “Bev Perdue drops by,” 9/29/08) Today, Wachovia was bought out by Citigroup in a deal brokered by the FDIC.

Perdue, while speaking of job losses in North Carolina, also said the state was “fundamentally healthy and on the right track.” (Burns, Bobby, “Bev Perdue drops by,” 9/29/08)

August marked the eighth consecutive month of job losses in the state. The August unemployment rate of 6.9 percent marked the highest jobless rate since January 2002. (“NC unemployment rate reaches 6.9 percent,” WRAL.com, 9/19/08)

A poll conducted by Civitas in September found that 48 percent of North Carolinians feel the state is on the wrong track while only 35 percent believe the state is headed in the right direction. (September 2008 Decisionmaker Poll, 9/24/08)
