The Washington Post reports today:
The Republican National Committee elected Michael Steele as its first African American chairman today in Washington, a decision that came after an excruciating series of ballots that displayed a level of drama rarely seen in national politics.
On the sixth and final ballot Steele bested South Carolina Republican party Chairman Katon Dawson 91 to 77.
“It’s time for something completely different and we are going to bring it to them,” Steele said after his victory. “This is our opportunity. I cannot do this by myself.”
Watch Chairman Steele’s acceptance speech:
Are you a registered Republican? If not, go out and register TODAY if you want to participate in our upcoming County Convention, District Convention, and State Convention. The rules are very clear: you must be registered by January 31st in order to be a county delegate. You must be a county delegate in order to be a state delegate. In the past, Republicans have missed the deadline by waiting until the last minute because the Board of Elections official did not process the paperwork until the next day. We have no way of rectifying this situation so please register right away if you wish to be a delegate.
We are looking for committed, passionate Republicans to run for BCGOP officer positions. Visit our Volunteer page in order to read detailed job descriptions for each office. We have had more young, enthusiastic, and energetic Republicans join our ranks since the November election than we have had all year. There has never been a better time (or a more important time) to become an active participant in our party and help make a real difference in Buncombe County.

Barack Obama will make history tomorrow when he is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. Even if we did not vote for him, the people have spoken and so Barack Obama will become everyone’s President. Whether we call ourselves Republicans, Democrats, liberals, or conservatives, our President deserves our respect and support.
Our country faces tremendous challenges and we recognize the need to find common ground so that we can work together, even if we continue to disagree on many issues. We are Americans before we are Republicans or Democrats. Barack Obama currently has the highest approval rating in several decades for a President-elect. Even many Republicans who did not vote for him have hope that this new administration will successfully guide our country through uncertain times.
The Buncombe County Republican Party will continue to hold all of our elected officials, regardless of party affiliation, accountable to their campaign promises and their oaths of office. We will continue to push the issues of fiscal responsibility, a return to our Constitution, and limited government intervention in our lives. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the people to ensure that our government operates according to our laws and for the good of the people. Our role as citizens does not change regardless of which party is elected to office.
Sincerely,
Timothy F. Johnson, Ph.D.
Chairman
Buncombe County Republican Party
Councilmember Carl Mumpower released the following statement regarding “Goal Recommendations” for the 2009 Asheville City Council Retreat:
These goal recommendations are predicated on the following -
- A belief that the Federal borrow and spend policies are neither appropriate or adequate to the role of securing our economy and that our national and local economic downturn will be dramatic and long-term.
- A position that the best governments are those which anticipate revenue/service issues before the fact rather than react during or after the crisis.
- A belief that sacrifice, adjustment, and recovery should be modeled from the top down.
- A position that we should not participate in further harm to our economy be seeking or accepting Federal or State revenue that is derived from borrowed funds or budgetary largesse.

Shawn Steel, Republican National Committeeman from California, offers an interesting perspective on the top contenders for the RNC Chairman position, on FlashReport.org:
As the elected Republican National Committeeman from California, I plan on sharing information over the next few weeks on the race for the Chairmanship of the Republican National Committee. Who wins the RNC chairmanship will help propel Republicans or get us sidetracked into a ditch.
The RNC Chair is only the official face and public opposition to the Democrat Hegemony.
Every time Obama, Reid and Pelosi speak, only the RNC chair was be the Republican voice. Not our guys in the House or Senate. The January 28 election for the new RNC chair is the most important vote for all 168 (3 per state plus 6 territories) RNC members. The vote will take place one week after the Obama Inaugural in Washington DC… and it’s getting mighty hot for all 168 members.
In a press release yesterday, current NCGOP Chairman Linda Daves announced she would not seek re-election this June at the state Republican convention. The press release reads as follows:
RALEIGH—Chairman Linda Daves, North Carolina Republican Party, released the following statement today.
“Serving as the Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party has been a great honor. The ability to serve the interests of the people of North Carolina has been one of the great privileges of my life. The best part of this job has been the ability to meet the many diverse people who make up the fabric of our state. I have spent many years working alongside dedicated, hardworking Republicans in North Carolina as a grassroots activist. It is these good people who make up the heart and soul of our party. Having the ability to see their commitment to making our state the best that it can be has given me renewed hope for our future each day.
I am proud of what Republicans have been able to accomplish together for the people of North Carolina over the last two years. The fruit of the labor associated with party building takes time to grow.
I think it is good and healthy for an organization to have fresh, new leadership periodically. At the conclusion of my term in June, I will step aside and allow someone else the honor and responsibility of guiding this party into the future. I am an activist and I will continue my work with candidates and Republican leaders across North Carolina to ensure our progress forward and to advocate for conservative fiscal and social policies. Between now and June, when a new chairman will be elected, I will continue to work diligently with our activists and other party leaders to assess our strengths and weaknesses and to begin the process of rebuilding.”
The North Carolina Republican Party will elect a new chairman at the 2009 NCGOP Convention held June 12-14 in Raleigh.
From the Charlotte Observer’s, Under The Dome section:
The 2010 Senate race is heating up.
With Democrats coming off one of their best election cycles ever, U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, a Republican, already has two potential opponents: Attorney General Roy Cooper and U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler (and maybe departing state Treasurer Richard Moore).
To prepare, Burr has stepped up his media efforts in recent weeks.
And last week, his office unveiled a revamped Web site that features a blog, a podcast and video.
The site has been redesigned and streamlined and is, to Dome’s eyes, more attractive than the usual Senate Web page.
