The Spring 2009 Class of Fellows of the Institute of Political Leadership (IOPL) graduated Saturday, June 6, 2009 on the campus of Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC. It is the fortieth class to graduate from the IOPL Fellows Program.
Dr. Craven Williams, President of Greensboro College and member of the IOPL Board of Directors, welcomed the graduating Fellows on behalf of the College and the Board, and Dr. Robert H. “Robin” Dorff, Executive Director, presided. IOPL Alumni Fellow and former NC State Representative Bill Daughtridge delivered the Graduation Address. Ms. Tanya Roberts of New Bern gave the response on behalf of her class, and Ms. Gale Wilkins of Raleigh delivered the Invocation. Daughtridge, Williams, and Dorff awarded diplomas to the twelve graduates of the Spring 2009 class.
“The tradition continues,” said Dorff. “This is our second class in partnership with Greensboro College and we could not be more pleased. The College and Greensboro generally have been very welcoming and we look forward to expanding our relationships with the community.”
In addition, Dorff pointed to the joint support of the John William Pope Foundation and the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation as especially critical to the re-establishment of the Fellows Program. “The willingness of those two foundations to make longer term commitments, and the support and enthusiasm of IOPL Board members Art Pope, Jim Melvin, Governor Jim Hunt, and Dr. Craven Williams, has allowed us to
move forward and make plans for a bright future.” Dorff also thanked all the individuals and organizations who contributed their time, talents, and facilities to the Fellows Program. While this class was a little smaller than normal, Dorff called it “a very special group of talented individuals,” adding: “We expect great things from them!”

It is understandable how Dr Johnson should feel shame over his past transgressions. However, he should have realized that his past would be divulged. Therefore, his fellow North Carolina GOP does have a reason to be upset.
Timothy Johnson pleaded guilty in 2006 to aggravated assault in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
The incident involved his wife, from whom he’s now divorced. Johnson was given a 18 month-suspended sentence, ordered to move to Toledo and undergo domestic violence counseling.
Although, Dr. Johnson’s domestic crime should have no bearing on his performance, the question that comes to my mind is Dr. Johnson’s present sincerity in regards to transparency in politics.
