Timothy F. Johnson, Chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party, will step down, effective July 31. 1st Vice Chairman, Robert Malt, will step in as Chairman. Johnson first announced this decision at yesterday’s Annual Chairman’s Picnic, citing a career opportunity in the Raleigh area for his wife as the primary reason. Johnson was elected as the state Vice Chairman last month and this move also puts him closer to the state Republican Party’s headquarters.
“Throughout my campaign for state Vice Chairman, and through my time as County Chairman, my wife has supported me through good times and bad. She has stood by me and given me the strength I needed,” says Johnson. “I never intended to leave Buncombe County and I plan to maintain strong ties here, but it’s my turn now to support my wife and her goals.”
Malt has served as 1st Vice Chairman since the March County Convention and is responsible for bringing several new precinct chairs and area coordinators to the party. He has worked extensively in recent months to organize the precincts in preparation for the upcoming 2009 and 2010 elections. Johnson expressed confidence that his resignation would not have a negative impact on the progress that has been made.
“We have a solid group of young and energetic officers who are eager to move our party forward.” Johnson said. “Robert is a strategic thinker who knows what takes to win. He is surrounded by a dedicated organization of volunteers who are willing to work hard to move our community and our country in the right direction.”
Johnson expects to return to Buncombe County often in his role as NCGOP Vice Chairman. He has already visited several counties throughout the state since his election. The NCGOP Plan of Organization states, “The Vice-Chairman shall maintain close liaison with the District and County Vice-Chairman and encourage and direct activities in the Party structure.”
Johnson has been credited with increasing diversity within the party, embracing the use of effective technology, and uniting the local party around the Republican Principles. He was first elected as Chairman of the Buncombe GOP in March 2008.

Thanks to everyone who came to our Annual Chairman’s Picnic yesterday. It was even better than last year! We heard from candidates Ryan Croft, Robert Edwards, and John Carroll and are looking forward to helping them win.
Check out pictures from the picnic in our Photo Gallery.

The following message is from J. Neal Jackson, Asheville resident, entrepeneur, and now Asheville City Council candidate:
Dear Friends and Supporters,
It’s Official!
Last week I filed the official paperwork at the Buncombe County Board of Elections and formally became a candidate for Asheville City Council. The journey has begun!
It’s going to be a long, hot summer but together I know we can take the heat and beat back the opposition to restore accountability, efficiency, and responsibility to our local government. We’ve already had great responses from folks downtown and now it’s time to carry the message to the entire city. With two more Eagle St. block parties on August 15 and September 19 on the way and the full time commitment to reach every voter, I’m going to need your help to fight for our city.
As a father, business owner, employer, and 12 year resident of Asheville, I feel that now more than ever our citizens aren’t getting what they deserve from their elected officials. The economy may be slow and the chips may be down, but I have faith in the people of Asheville and I intend to fight for them every day when I am elected to City Council.
Now is the time to make the first big push in campaign activity to really get our name out there. Your contribution of $50 or more will really go a long way and help to get bumper stickers, t-shirts, campaign signs and pamphlets to spread our cause further. If you can’t contribute $50 then $20 or $10 will be greatly appreciated.
To Contribute Mail Checks to:

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s not going to be easy… if it were, I wouldn’t be doing it.
But together you and I can restore accountability to City Council and put us on the right track for the years to come.
Until the official website is up, please join us on this site in the mean time.
Thanks again for your support, I look forward to working with you.
J. Neal Jackson
Asheville City Council
Accountability. Efficiency. Responsibility.
The Town of Woodfin will hold a public meeting at Woodfin Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. on July 21 on the question of annexation of territory in the Leicester section of Buncombe County. This meeting may be moved to the Woodfin Community Center or elsewhere. If you show up and it’s been moved, there will be Woodfin police directing traffic to the right location.
A strong opposition will make an impact! Bring a friend and wear a red shirt. All residents and property owners affected will be given the opportunity to speak and ask questions regarding the proposed annexation.
Contact Betty Jackson at 259-9160 or bettyjackson@charter.net for more information on how you can help.
The Buncombe County Republican Party opposes forced annexation. Residents should always at minimum have the opportunity to vote on annexation. When members of the community show up at city meetings, it DOES have an impact.
On a scale of 1 through 10, how proud and grateful are you to live in The United States of America? I know that many of you are thinking eleven!
But perhaps you aren’t. No one will know, so be honest. Maybe you’re just a 7 or a 5 or maybe you’re thinking “I just happened to be born here instead of somewhere else. What difference does it make?”
In recent years, there has been a resurgance in interest in our founding documents, founding fathers, and the extensive thought and debate that went into creating our country as an independent nation over 200 years ago. As individuals become more educated on these topics, their pride and devotion to this country also tends to rise.
If you don’t feel terribly excited about Independence Day this year, may we suggest that you spend some time today, learning about the founding of our nation? You may come to realize that The United States of America is something of a miracle and that our founding fathers were true geniuses.
Wikipedia is always a good place to get started (but certainly not the full story):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_(United_States)
Better yet, attend the Independence Day Tea Party at 3pm outside the courthouse in downtown Asheville. There are bound to be tremendous speakers who have studied our national history extensively and will share that story with us all today.
The Buncombe County Republican Party wishes you and your family a wonderful 4th of July. In good times and not-so-good times, we have faith in the American people to overcome our challenges and we look forward to working with you to preserve our great heritage.
