The Buncombe County Republican Party was on hand Tuesday night at the Woodfin Town Council Meeting, to thank Woodfin Mayor Jerry VeHaun and the Woodfin Aldermen for their unanimous decision to suspend plans to annex thousands of Leicester residents.

First Vice Chairman, Johnnie Elliott, praised the council for their “principled decision.” He went on to state that forced annexation “causes anger and resentment every time it comes up” because people don’t like to have their taxes raised and their property rights infringed upon by a government that they did not have an opportunity to elect.

The Buncombe County Republican Party has stood firmly against forced annexation, taking a public stand against it during the 2008 election. All five Republican candidates for the County Commission as well as two state house and one state senate candidate made it a central component of their platform, which read, “[we will] bring jobs to Buncombe County by putting a moratorium on forced annexation so that we stop scaring away businesses who don’t want to see their taxes increase.”

Other county residents are currently under threat of forced annexation by Weaverville. GOP Chairman, Robert Malt, says the party will help in whatever way it can to stop such a move. “Governments will keep trying to trample the rights of citizens, and the Buncombe County Republican Party will continue to oppose their unjust actions. We are hopeful that other municipalities throughout Buncombe County will follow Woodfin’s lead and look for solutions that do not infringe upon individuals’ rights.”

Carl MumpowerThe following is from Carl Mumpower, City Councilmember, and candidate for re-election:

Like most communities, my home city, Asheville, NC has a local Chamber of Commerce.  This organization of local business interests is manned by enthusiastic and, from experience, well intended people.  On the plus side, these good folks unite the business community and give voice to the importance of commerce.  On the minus side, like most special interest groups, they are busy gaming America.

Special interest groups can serve a good purpose in raising awareness on issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.  Unfortunately in today’s “big government” America, where the free enterprise system and rule of law have been selectively laid aside, it is very difficult for special interest groups to resist the temptation to join the herd and milk the system.  The result is a parade of selfish interest groups busily trumping the common interests.  Despite a well contrived image, the ‘American as apple pie’ Chamber of Commerce is no exception.
