Don’t forget, our Forum and Straw Poll for the 11th District Congressional Candidates is next week! And we want your input on what questions to ask. We have already received quite a few suggestions but there is still room for more.
This forum will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 6:00pm at the Ferguson Auditorium at A-B Tech. There is no cost to attend and all are welcome. Submit questions through our Contact Us page or email us info@buncombegop.org.
Robert Malt, Chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party, was on Matt Mittan’s live call-in radio program, Take A Stand on Tuesday. You can listen to the audio by clicking the links below:
11.17.09 Part 1 (1 hour)
11.17.09 Part 2 (1 hour)
So grab some popcorn, settle into a comfy chair, and listen to Robert Malt talking about politics, our elected representatives, and the Republican Party at the local, state, and national levels.
We are delighted to see that Dr. Carl Mumpower, former Asheville City Council member, continues to speak out in support of our Republican Principles.
A Big Tent Circus
The big tent power struggle within the Republican Party continues unabated. Mirroring the progressive destruction of the stand for everything Democrat Party, so called Republicans seek to insure the party of Lincoln broadens its values until it stands for nothing. In the end, the two respective ditches of limitless values and no values lead to the same swamp – power, money, and ever bigger government dominating little people.
If a political party asserts representation of a crystallized set of principles, just how does one manage to uphold that value system moderately? Would it be reasonable to suggest that a Christian moderately ascribe to the Ten Commandments? Can one go swimming and only moderately get wet? Is it possible for one to fly moderately and meet with success? Was the Islamic soldier who killed 13 and wounded 30 people at Fort Hood more moderate than those who killed thousands on 9-11?
There may be such a thing as a moderate political power player, but there is certainly no such thing as a moderate Republican. The latter label more surely describes a political pragmatist with a little conservative seasoning to flavor the soup fed to constituents. Warm spit politics will get a candidate elected – it will not inspire or sustain a nation.
A quick review of the stated Principles of the Republican Party demonstrates the dishonesty of the politics of mediocrity. That path is more about seduction than principles. The bigger the tent – the bigger the circus and room for suckers with a free ticket.
Why Does It Matter?
One does not have to be hateful, cold, or angry to be a Republican. If our principles mean anything, however, one does have to have a dedication to something besides winning and political expediency. Without a party that stands for something people can count on, it all becomes a power and money game where the party with least principles likely wins.
Due to significant interest in the upcoming Republican Congressional primary election, which is just over 6 months away, the Buncombe County Republican Party is sponsoring a forum for all 2010 Congressional Candidates in the 11th District. This forum will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 6:00pm at the Ferguson Auditorium at A-B Tech. There is no cost to attend.
Each candidate will have equal time to answer questions asked by the moderator. To ensure that as many different topics as possible are covered, those who plan to attend are encouraged to submit questions for the candidates by emailing info@buncombegop.org.
The invited candidates are those who have already announced their candidacies or have signaled their intention to announce at a later date, and who have been publicly campaigning at Republican events around the district.
Confirmed candidates include Dan Eichenbaum, Ed Krause, Scott Stump, and Kenny West. Other invited candidates include Greg Newman and Dan Ostergaard.
There will be a straw poll at the end of the forum. Each person in attendance will be provided a ballot at registration.
There’s been much talk lately about Democratic Congressman Heath Shuler, his suspicious dealings with Tennessee Valley Authority, the fact that he only votes “no” on liberal bills after Congress has enough “yes” votes to pass it, and his support for House Speaker Pelosi.
Robert Danos of Henderson County has been leading the charge against Shuler to bring his underhanded actions to light. Our Buncombe County GOP chairman, Robert Malt, joined Danos at Shuler’s local office, asking him to sign the “Pelosi Pledge”, which states that Shuler will not vote for Pelosi as House Speaker in the future. Much press has come out of these efforts. Click here to read the article on the Pelosi Pledge.
Even more interesting, is an editorial by AC-T reporter, John Boyle, entitled Heath Shuler fumbles his own credibility with statement.
There’s just no pretty way to put this: Congressman Heath Shuler flat-out lied.
Technically, he lied to the media — repeatedly. But, really, he lied to all of his constituents.
Shuler, D-Waynesville, has steadfastly denied contacting the Tennessee Valley Authority about a land swap between the authority and a development company he’s a partner in, the Cove at Blackberry Ridge LLC.
But according to a report from the TVA’s Inspector General released this week, Shuler told investigators that he contacted TVA Chief Executive Tom Kilgore in 2007 to complain about the lack of progress in the land swap. Shuler sits on a congressional committee that oversees the federal electric authority, but he said he took off his “congressional hat” when talking to Kilgore about the land deal.
I found two stories in our archive from 2008 in which Shuler asserted he had no contact with the TVA about the project, and he told numerous other media outlets the same story. The stories in our archive were written for the Citizen-Times by Doug Abrahms, who at the time was a reporter for Gannett News Service.

Carl Mumpower has served 2 terms on Asheville City Council and has been a tireless watchdog and advocate for residents, speaking out against fiscally irresponsible decisions, insisting that the Council follow it’s own rules, and fighting against drug-related crime and illegal immigration. With the results of last night’s local election, the people have lost a great ally on the Council.
We hope that Dr. Mumpower continues to play an active and vocal role in our community, both with regard to Asheville politics, as well as with keeping the Republican Party honest. His commitment to Republican Principles has had a tremendous influence here in Buncombe County and around the entire district.
Thank you, Dr. Mumpower, for the honesty and sincerity that you bring to our community, and for your tireless efforts over the last 8 years.
Congratulations to newly elected and re-elected Republicans:
Biltmore Forest Commissioners, Dorris Loomis and E. Glenn Kelley
Montreat Mayor, Letta Jean Taylor
Woodfin Mayor, Jerry VeHaun
Woodfin Alderman, Donald Hensley
Woodfin Water and Sewer District Trustees, Keith Snyder and Lisa McDaris
Don’t forget to vote at your regular polling location today!
List of Republican candidates is here.
Polls are open until 7:30pm.
Not sure where to vote? Find out here.
We have enough Republicans, even in Asheville, to get our candidates elected. But only if we get out and vote.
