We’re thrilled to see that Dr. Mumpower continues to stay engaged in politics and that the people continue to listen.

The following event is being organized by Betty Jackson, of StopWoodfin.org. The Buncombe County Republican Party is proud to stand with any citizens who fight against forced annexation. Please read this important announcement from Betty:

On Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at 2:00 PM, freedom and democracy go to court to fight the atrocity of forced annexation. That citizens of the United States would have to battle local government in a court of law for justice is certainly shameful, and is an effort that we can and should support.

The City of Asheville has been aggressively using the club of bad law in an attempt to forcibly annex the Biltmore Lake Community. And the community has been fighting back! When Asheville would not back down, BLC hired a lawyer and their day in court is fast approaching.

In an effort to support not only the Biltmore Lake Community, but all communities across North Carolina who are combating forced annexation, Betty Jackson and StopWoodfin.org are staging a protest to coincide with the opening day of the trial. Please join in – all opponents of forced annexation are invited!

Thanks,
Betty Jackson

Details:
Date: Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Time: 2:00 – 5:00 PM
Place: In front of the Buncombe County Courthouse
Literature will be available for handouts.

From the Asheville Tea Party:

Four members of Asheville Regional Airport’s governing board, North Carolina General Assemblywoman Susan Fisher, Buncombe County Commission Chairman David Gantt, Asheville attorney and airport board Chairman Dave Hillier, and consultant to the wireless communications industry Rhett Grotzinger, have flown to a Hawaii resort at a cost of just more than $17,000 in taxpayer money. The Aviation Issues Conference is being held Sunday through midday Thursday at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali.

Two of the participants, both elected officials, justify the expense by pointing to what they will gain personally from the conference. According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, County Commission Chairman Gantt believes the thousands of dollars in public money is well spent because the connections he makes may “come in handy later.” State Rep. Susan Fisher likes these types of conferences because they improve her effectiveness as a board member. Neither commented on what the actual benefit would be to area taxpayers. Fisher did allow, “It makes me feel for people who have to deal with 17-degree weather.”

A later update revised the story to only three members of the Airport Board, after one member, Rhett Grotzinger, opted out of the trip.

Rhett Grotzinger, the individual originally reported to be the fourth traveler, declined to participate in the conference via an email to Airport Director Lew Bleiweis this morning.  In his statement to Bleiweis, Grotzinger said, “…information that I’ve become aware of since making arrangements to attend last November, including the number of other board members also attending, leads me to this decision.”

Especially in light of Grotzinger’s principled refusal to participate in this conference, the remaining three participants owe local taxpayers an explanation for their actions.
