Young people who do not complete high school face many more problems later in life than do those who graduate. While national leaders have demanded that schools, communities, and families make a major effort to retain students, the dropout rate remains high. But at Erwin High School, the Guidance Counselors have “dropped” the drop out rate in half, in less than a year.
In the 2008 – 2009 school year, Erwin High School had 109 students drop out of school.
In the 2009 – 2010 school year, Erwin High School only had 56 students drop out.
The Buncombe County Republican Party would like to recognize Guidance Counselors Donna Pate, Carl Firley, Amy Longstreth, Laura McReary and Secretary Krista Ducket for their dedication and determination in keeping students in school.
Way to go Erwin!

Asheville NC – Residents of a mobile home park, Eden Glenn, owned by NC State Democratic Party Chairman David Young say it’s unfair to charge for dirty water. Residents say water has always been dirty at the park and they are charged for it by their landlord David Young. These residents are poor and most of them are Hispanic and do not speak English.
About 3 years ago, Eden Glenn residents contacted the conservative organization Carolina Stompers for help. The Stompers tested the water several times and it came back positive for bacteria. Children were getting sick. Parents were having to wash their clothes in the creek that flows through the middle of the park. Living conditions were deplorable. Findings were turned over to the Buncombe County Health Department but nothing was done to fix the problem. The owner of the park, David Young, was a Buncombe County Commissioner at the time.
The people of Eden Glenn Mobile Home Park deserve clean water. The Buncombe County Republican Party is formally asking the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources for a full investigation into the matter. (That letter can be found here). Included in this investigation we are asking NCDENR to look at the small water treatment plant, (located on Mr. Youngs property), for the sewage accumulated from the park. The sewage treatment plant is only 4 feet away from a stream. If flooding occurs, raw sewage could flow in to the stream. We are also asking for authorities to investigate the water metering company associated with the park.
We question whether environmental organizations and government agencies would have penalized and held the owner accountable had it been anybody else’s trailer park. We ask Democrats and other concerned organizations to join us in demanding that David Young provide clean water to his tenants and resign as Chairman of the party that claims to be the protector of the environment and of the people.
We also suggest David Young come down and have a drink of his own water with the people that live at Eden Glenn Mobile Home Park.
Sincerely,
Chad Nesbitt
Chairman

From the Citizen-Times (which was also vandalized):
Vandals destroy downtown Asheville storefronts, car windows
Here is an excerpt from the story:
About 10:45 p.m. Saturday, a group of between 20-30 people wearing dark clothing, some wearing masks and carrying backpacks, threw items, including newspaper boxes, through windows of several businesses along O’Henry Avenue. A front window of the Asheville Citizen-Times was shattered, as were multiple storefronts at the Grove Arcade. An ATM was smashed at the RBC on O’Henry.
Multiple cars parked on Battery Park had their windows smashed.
Police had 11 people in custody as of about 11:35 p.m. after swiftly responding to the violence. Two were arrested on Wall Street. Many of the suspects were from areas across North Carolina.
The violence is likely linked to the observance of May Day, a day for marking worker solidarity that has been seized upon for anti-capitalism displays of violence, especially by self-proclaimed anarchist groups in Europe.
Please make an extra effort this week to support downtown Asheville businesses. Small businesses are critical for our local jobs and economic growth and the owners and employees of these businesses are members of our community.
Based on broken and boarded up windows, the following businesses in and near the Grove Arcade building appear to have been vandalized:
- Asheville Citizen-Times
- RBC Bank
- Grove Arcade
- Grove Arcade Copy Shop
- The Eye Center
