It’s been reported today that new home sales unexpectedly dropped nearly 33% in May, according to a Commerce Department report. This knocked stocks down and raised fears of a “double-dip recession”. Since housing is one of the big industries in Buncombe County, this should raise eyebrows around here too.
Why would they consider this “unexpected”?
The “Home Buyers Tax Credit” that the Obama administration put into place, expired on May 1st. While it was in place the home sales picked up dramatically. But….
Everyone who was planning on buying a home here in the Asheville area sometime this year, and was eligible for this credit made sure they bought their new home before May 1st. Even if they weren’t originally going to buy until much later in the year. Their rationale was completely natural. “If the Government is going to give us $8000 to buy a house, but we have to close on it before May 1st, so then we better move up our plans so we can get this money!”
Now that the credit is over, and everyone pulled their purchases back into April, there are many fewer buyers out there. They already bought their homes. So home sales fall in May. This should come as no surprise.
And here’s what folks in Buncombe County, and especially our Commissioners and Town Councils need to understand; all of the false economic activity that is driven by stimulus money dries up as soon as the stimulus money itself dries up.
What we need in Buncombe County are tax reductions that will increase economic activity. Lower taxes give people more money to spend and give businesses more money to hire. It’s really that simple.
My Fellow Republicans,
The first chapter of our “Win In 2010″ efforts is over and the BCGOP Outreach Program was a tremendous success. It was the first time that I can think of that the BCGOP went out into the seven school districts in Buncombe County and invited voters to fight with us for conservative principles! While the Democrats have to hire people, we now have an army of strong-willed American volunteers needed to man the polls, help put up signs, make phone calls, etc. There is nothing stronger than the hearts of these volunteers!
In our efforts we learned a lot. These events started out with Loyd Kirk, Tim Hyatt, Sid Johnson, Chris Eck, Kathy Rhodharmer, Chuck Durand, Jerry Lemonds, Danny and Betty Roberts, Bill Lack, Mike Fryer, and I’m sure I am forgetting somebody, standing out in front of our Headquarters waving people in to hand them a flier. It then progressed to posting fliers around town and in convenience stores. Radio ads and meeting business owners in each community came next.
We raised money with the plant sale to pay for most of the radio ads. The radio ads had a large impact in generating excitement amongst conservatives across Buncombe County. These brash and informative ads targeted the base we set out to energize and everywhere we went, people thanked the BCGOP for “telling it like it is“. Even Chairmen of other counties were calling to say, “Wow! How can we do what Buncombe is doing?”
But the most effective way of getting people to our events were the fliers. The personal touch of handing someone a flyer and inviting them to come made all the difference in the world. This could not have been done without the hard work or our First Vice Chairman Chris Eck, Area Coordinators, and Precinct Chairs.
I want to thank Chris Eck for keeping everybody notified and organized. Over the past 7 weeks our First Vice Chairman had meetings with all Area Coordinators a week before each event. He made sure our events had sound equipment. And he has a wonderful way of motivating people to become volunteers.
Our Area Coordinators, Betty Budd, Bill Reynolds, Jerry Lemonds, Jeff Land, Jenny Stiles, George Keller, Larry Keller, Robin Ramsey, and Bill Lack, did a great job. These events could not have been successful without them as well as the Precinct Chairs who helped. These Area Coordinators and Precinct Chairs handed out flyers, set up chairs, entertained, and one even brought a full spread of refreshments to eat and drink.
Our Communications Director Diana Kantor recently informed me that we now have over 1000 people on the BCGOP email list and it continues to rise.
The hard work of the above individuals, along with our willingness to demonstrate how the BCGOP is fighting for conservatives, made this happen.
Now that we have energized Buncombe Republican base and have an army of volunteers, the second phase of “Win In 2010” begins. As the leadership of the Buncombe County Democrat Party continue to spend money, loose jobs, and embarrass themselves, the Buncombe County Republican Party will focus our attention on what’s great about the United States Of America.
We are going to become the most patriotic machine this county has ever seen! At the same time we are going to get our candidates’ names out there and promote them with everything we have!
I look forward to sharing the details of our second phase with you at our next Executive Meeting on June 24th. All Buncombe Republicans are welcome.
May God Bless You and may God continue to bless the Buncombe County Republican Party.
Sincerely,
Chad Nesbitt
Chairman
Buncombe County Republican Party

Hi everyone,
Let’s burn up the phone lines in Raleigh on this!
We have a real chance for annexation law reform this session, in spite of the naysayers. Your help making phone calls is very much needed and would be very much appreciated.
NC Senator Larry Shaw, who introduced a TRUE annexation reform bill in the last session of the General Assembly, has been speaking with Senator Martin Nesbitt (District 49) about his (Shaw’s) desire to move ahead with genuine annexation reform this session. Senator Nesbitt will be speaking with Senator Marc Basnight about this issue. Just so you know, we are talking about the people who currently hold the power — Sen. Nesbitt is the majority leader of the Senate and Sen. Basnight is the president of the Senate — they are major deal-makers and deal-breakers.
Please take a minute or two and call Sen. Nesbitt. If you have more time, please call Sens. Basnight, Clodfelter and Hoyle also. Encourage them to “do all they can to get Sen. Shaw’s legislation regarding annexation out this session.”
Senators Phil Berger and Larry Shaw truly understand that the intent of the annexation law has been perverted and the voice of the people needs to be restored. Senator Brock has introduced legislation to restore the vote of the people every year since he was elected. Sen. Shaw, and co-sponsoring Sens. Brock, Rouzer and Berger could be called too — to thank them for working for annexation reform, and encourage them to continue to help convince others to support it too.
Martin Nesbitt 919-715-3001
Marc Basnight 919-733-6854
Daniel Clodfelter 919-715-8331
David Hoyle 919-733-5734
Larry Shaw 919-733-9349
Philip Berger 919-733-5708
Andrew Brock 919-715-0690
David Rouzer 919-733-5748
Some of us have been calling already. Word is that the phones rang HOT Wednesday afternoon and throughout the day Thursday. Let’s keep it up!
Thanks so much!

BCGOP Precinct Chairman Kyle Carver and volunteers of the Leicester Community held a Memorial Day Service at the Leicester Community Center today. Local families brought pictures of their loved ones that died fighting for our freedoms we hold so dear in the United States. The pictures of the soldiers were hung on the center wall of the community center. The group had food, cake, drinks, and music prepared for the entire community. The Erwin High School ROTC fired a 21 gun salute to our fallen heroes. They did a wonderful job and we were all proud of these American soldiers and their families. Thank you, Kyle, for all you do for your community!
