Archive for September 2010
On Friday, September 17, 2010, in celebration of Constitution Day which marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, the BCGOP invited our local Republican candidates to sign a pledge that they would support and defend our Constitution. Our BCGOP officers also signed a pledge that they would hold our elected officials to that promise.
By following the U.S. Constitution, the erosion of our individual and economic liberties could not happen.
Check out the photo album to see photos of all of our candidates and BCGOP officers signing the pledge.
On September 11, 2010, the Buncombe County Republican Party held an event in remembrance of the victims of 9/11, their families, our nation and its defenders – and most especially – our affirmation of the continued protection of our liberties.
Present were 80 people, including veterans, active duty military personnel, fire fighters, ROTC cadets, and concerned Republican families. Members of the BCGOP rappelled from the fireman’s training center tower as part of a “get out the vote” fund raising effort. The ROTC provided our Color Guard and their cadets had a positive rappelling experience under the supervision of their senior leaders.
Lunch was followed by a ceremony honoring 9-11 victims. Regina Jones, born in soviet controlled East Germany, gave a speech about growing up in a communist/socialist country. Now a naturalized American citizen, she spoke to the importance of freedom and the efforts by some to rob us of our liberties. The BCGOP chair read a speech by a United States Navy Officer about the terrorist attack on 9-11 and other related attacks over the past 2 decades. Those in attendance, indifferent to the persisting bad weather, voiced universal appreciation for the opportunity to gather together to honor 9-11 and the defense of our liberties.
On the eve of 9-11, WLOS did a news story called “Playing Politics”. Reporter Frank Kracher, (who worked for the Obama campaign before returning to WLOS – bio can be found athttp://www.linkedin.com/in/frankkracher) provided an excellent demonstration of media bias and how to use a national day of tragedy to manipulate the community.
Democrat candidate Heath Shuler was interviewed in the WLOS story and said that the BCGOP event was “the worst display of politics”, he had ever seen. Ironically, he was subsequently supported in that position by the Republican Candidate for the 11th District Congressional seat – Jeff Miller. It is our understanding that we were also called to task by the State Democratic Party. We appreciate the opportunity to respond to these criticisms.
The Buncombe County GOP takes special delight in our Saturday event and will repeat the effort next year. It is our position that criticism coming from a NC Democratic Party that honored a white supremacist annually for over 50 years speaks volumes on their credibility and motives. The report on our event by WLOS reporter Kracher is simply a continuation of a liberal media bias with which we are all familiar. As regards to comments by our congressional candidates, it would be our position that campaigning through uninformed criticism does not speak well to the judgment and maturity of these potential representatives.
The activities by the Buncombe County GOP on Saturday followed the traditions of Veteran’s Day – whereby ceremony, celebration, and fundraising (poppy flower sales) are combined. We offer only one apology on the event – that media outlets, politicians, and political power brokers chose to misuse it in a way that mocks everything our country, and this special day, are truly about.

When: Friday, September 17, 9:00am
Where: Buncombe County Courthouse, 60 Court Plaza in Asheville, Main Lobby
On September 17, 1787 our founders signed the Constitution of the United States of America. Since then, politicians on both sides of the aisle have tried to ignore and disintegrate this extremely important document. As our country is being devoured by a socialist agenda, Americans deserve straight talk and assurances from their leaders. The Buncombe County Republican Party believes in the US Constitution, as do our Republican candidates.
On Friday September 17, 2010, our Buncombe County Republican candidates will sign a contract with the citizens of Buncombe County. This contract simply states that they will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
As principled volunteers, the officers and the Executive Committee of the Buncombe County Republican Party will also sign a contract with the citizens of Buncombe County. This contract states that if our Republican candidates break their contract with the citizenry, the Buncombe County Republican Party will publicly call them out and will work to replace them when they are up for re-election.
In honor of our founders and the September 17, 1787 signing of the Constitution, we will sign the “Contract With The Citizens Of Buncombe County” on Friday, September 17, 2010 beginning at 9:00 AM in the main lobby of the Buncombe County Courthouse.
All are welcome to attend.

In the interest of fair and honest elections, the Buncombe County Republican Party is asking the Buncombe County Board of Elections to change its plans for an early voting site which is adjacent to the Congressional office of Democrat incumbent Heath Shuler. The planned voting site will severely impair the integrity of the election process.
The recently released list of early voting site locations from the Board of Elections includes the Buncombe County Training Center, located at 199 College St. in downtown Asheville. This voting site is located directly beside the Congressional office of Heath Shuler, a Democrat running for re-election. The two buildings are joined together and the entranceway of the Buncombe County Training Center voting site is approximately 18 feet away from the entrance of Shuler’s office.
NC Election law states in the “Buffer Zone and Adjacent Area for Election Related Activity” section that, “No person or group of persons shall hinder access, harass others, distribute campaign literature, place political advertising, solicit votes, or otherwise engage in election related activity in the voting place or in a buffer zone which shall be prescribed by the county board of elections around the voting place. In determining the dimensions of that buffer zone for each voting place, the county board of elections shall, where practical, set the limit at 50 feet from the door of entrance to the voting place, measured when that door is closed, but in no event shall it set the limit at more than 50 feet or at less than 25 feet.”
While Heath Shuler’s Congressional office is not promoted as his campaign office, the location raises several critical issues.
Congressman Shuler’s name is on the front door of his building which is less than 50 feet away from the voting site, making it no less of a “political advertisement” than a billboard or yard sign.
Shuler’s tax payer funded “Creating a Job Friendly Mountain Region” brochure that was mailed to all voters in the 11th Congressional District, is readily available at his Congressional office. This brochure cost the tax payers hundreds of thousands of dollars and was conveniently produced just in time for the election. A brochure of this type should fall into the category of “distributing campaign literature”.
Members of Shuler’s campaign staff continually go in and out of the Congressional office door, which is within the buffer zone, where other candidate volunteers and political party volunteers are barred from “soliciting votes”.
We ask Congressman Shuler to either join the Buncombe County Republican Party in requesting that the Board of Elections change the location of this voting site in the interest of a fair election process. Alternatively, we ask Congressman Shuler to temporarily close his Congressional office and cover his political branding during the early voting period.

Please read the following message from Betty Jackson, of Stop Woodfin, about an important event in opposition to forced annexation.
When: Monday, September 13, 4:45 – 6:15pm
Where: Public Works Building, 161 S. Charlotte St.
Unfortunately the NC General Assembly met and left with no change in the forced annexation law, which means that we still have our work cut out for us.
On Monday we have an opportunity to show our displeasure of forced annexation, and at the same time show our support for the people of Buncombe County who live in the Royal Pines and Cooper’s Hawk Drive areas. These two areas are under attack by the City of Asheville with their intent to strong-arm the property owners into the city limits. There is strong opposition from the folks affected, and in an effort to undergird them as well as to demonstrate to the larger community that we don’t like forced annexation anywhere, we are holding a rally and protest. This will coincide with the public information meeting conducted by the Asheville City Council.
Please come on over at least for a short time. You can make a big impact! The more we can have public exposure like this, the more the state government will feel pressure to change the law, and local governments will feel the pressure of unpopularity, especially at election time in 2011.
The Public Works Building is a VERY visible location with lots of room on both sides of the street for people to congregate and wave signs. And it’s during rush hour. We could get some good media coverage.
Wear red! Bring a homemade sign. Invite your friends.
A word about parking: we’d like to leave the close parking spaces open so the people from Royal Pines and Cooper’s Hawk Drive can find a place near the building. A large parking lot is on the corner of South Charlotte and Davidson Streets, so finding a spot shouldn’t be difficult. Come early if you can!
Thanks! Hope to see you there!

When: Friday, Sept. 10, 10:45pm
Where: Mack Kells Pub and Grill
160 Tunnel Rd. in Asheville [map]
BCGOP Chairman Chad Nesbitt will be at Mack Kells Friday night, filming the band Twist Of Fate for the upcoming telethon fundraiser for the BCGOP. We’d love to see a good showing of strong conservatives – both for the band as well as for a good strong GOP presence in the community.
Come on down to Mack Kells on Tunnel Rd. at 10:45pm on Friday (tonight). Chad will buy a round of beer for everyone!
He can’t stay long after that though since he has to get up very early on Saturday to set up for the rappelling event at the Bee Tree Fire Department in Swannanoa!
Saturday Schedule Reminder:
Rappelling starts at 9:30 AM.
Free lunch for everyone at 12:00 PM.
9/11 Ceremony – “Defending America” at 1:00 PM
More rappelling at 1:30 PM.
All are welcome!
Saturday, September 11, 2010, the Buncombe County Republican Party will honor the victims of 9/11 by rappelling 210 times from a 90-foot tower at the Swannanoa / Bee Tree Fire Department. Local citizens have an opportunity to sponsor a rappel for $100.00 each. Funds collected will go toward “get out the vote” advertising for the 2010 election.
According to Buncombe GOP Chairman, Chad Nesbitt, who will participate in the rappel, “a mass turn out of conservative voters is the only way we can put America back on a positive track.” Several members of the ROTC will also be rappelling with Nesbitt.
“With the recent irresponsible remarks of President Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi regarding the World Trade Center, it is important that the victims of 9/11, their families, and our nation be remembered as well as defended,” says Nesbitt.
The rappelling will begin at 9am, with a free lunch at noon. A special “Defending America” ceremony will be held at 1pm, after which the rappelling will continue until 210 rappels have been completed. The Swannanoa Fire Department is located on Bee Tree Rd. / Warren Wilson College Rd. Look for the tower with a large American flag and large tent.
Citing “socialism as a cancer on America,” the Buncombe GOP has teamed up with Hunt the Cure, a local non-profit that benefits children with cancer. A percentage of each sponsorship will go directly to Hunt The Cure.
9/11 EVENT SCHEDULE:
Rappelling begins around 9:00 AM
A free lunch is served at 12:00 PM
Ceremony – “Defending America” is at 1:00 PM
More rappelling 1:30 PM
