Archive for November 2010
The Los Angeles Times recently reported that Nancy Pelosi had encouraged her Democratic caucus to do whatever they feel is necessary to win reelection this November, even if it means distancing themselves from her. During the 2010 11th Congressional District election, despite voting for Nancy Pelosi twice, Heath Shuler ran as a conservative and said that he was considering a run against Pelosi for Speaker of the House. In the LA Times article, Congressman Shuler said “I can do as good a job as anybody in the U.S. Congress, because I can actually bring people together.”
So, is Shuler going to run against Nancy Pelosi for Minority Leader? Buncombe County Republican Chairman Chad Nesbitt doesn’t think so. “With all the special interest and liberal PAC money Shuler received for his campaign and his apparent devotion to negative and deceptive campaigning, Shuler showed voters that he would say anything to get re-elected. I don’t think he will follow through.”
In a NPR article about the Minority Leader position Shuler said, “I might challenge Pelosi because the party needs a more moderate leader.” Shuler noted that he lost his job as Washington Redskins quarterback in 1997 after the team performed poorly, indicating that Pelosi should follow suit.
Nesbitt added, “Not only do I think he won’t cross Pelosi by running against her, I wouldn’t be surprised if he votes for her a third time.”
The following Republicans who were on the Buncombe County ballot have been elected to office:
Richard Burr, US Senate
Tom Apodaca, NC Senate (District 48)
Tim Moffitt, NC House (District 116)
Barbara Jackson (NC Supreme Court)
Rick Elmore, NC Court of Appeals (Elmore seat)
Ann Marie Calabria, NC Court of Appeals (Calabria seat)
Sanford Steelman, NC Court of Appeals (Steelman seat – uncontested)
Bob Rhinehart, School Board (Enka district)
Lisa Baldwin, School Board (Reynolds district)
Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked so tirelessly at the polls and at HQ. We truly appreciate the time and energy you gave to our candidates!
In related news, the US House now has a comfortable majority, and the Democrats have also lost their super majority in the US Senate. Several races across the country are still undecided.
Even more exciting is that Republicans now control both the NC House and NC Senate! Democrats have been running North Carolina for 112 years. This major shift in North Carolina comes just in time for the 2010 state-wide redistricting!
