Buncombe County Republican Party is outraged that NC State Representative Patsy Keever (D),  who is a former teacher, voted against barring sex offenders from being hired as EMS personnel. HB 59, entitled “SEX OFFENDERS CANNOT BE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PERSONNEL,” protects NC citizens at their most vulnerable moments from sex offenders.

Representative Keever’s “no” vote against this bill is the only “no” vote in the NC State House, with 117 house members voting in support of the bill. The bill passed the house on Monday night.

Chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party, Chad Nesbitt said, “Buncombe County is the most liberal county in the state. Keever’s lonely ‘no’ vote in support of sex offenders is not surprising and confirms the sick mindset and judgment of her and her supporters.” Chairman Nesbitt further said, “Don’t expect to hear the leadership of the Buncombe County Democrat Party speak out against her vote. Just like San Francisco, Buncombe progressives believe sex offenders deserve a second chance and would put the safety of our children in danger just to promote their political agenda.”

The BCGOP further thanked their neighbor in Henderson County, NC State Rep. Chuck McGrady, for sponsoring HB 59, which they say keeps NC citizens safe.

WLOS reports on a proposed budget that some worry will lead to teacher cuts. Newly elected school board member, Lisa Baldwin, speaks to WLOS about her ideas.

The newest member of the Buncombe County Schools board of education says talk of teacher job cuts is nothing more than fear mongering.  Lisa Baldwin calls it a “fear tactic” that’s demoralizing to teachers and is based on a hypothetical situation.  Baldwin says the proposed cuts won’t be known until the General Assembly passes a budget and the Governor’s proposal is just that, a proposal.

Board member Lisa Baldwin says school administrators are disingenuous when they say their first priority is protecting the classroom and then the next thing they say is teacher job cuts are coming.  She says consolidating schools, creating a more efficient bus system and cutting some of the 267 central office jobs should come first.  Baldwin is recommending the school board hire an outside firm to conduct an audit to find other cost savings.
