Dr. Carl Mumpower, our 11th District candidate for Congress, recently made controversial statements about his willingness to support the impeachment of President Bush over his failure to protect our country from the threat of illegal immigration. Our Buncombe County Republican Party Chairman, Dr. Timothy Johnson, responded with the following statement:
As you are well aware, Dr. Mumpower is his own person. He served in the Armed Forces during Vietnam and continues to serve our community as a member of city council for the city of Asheville. As the Republican nominee for the 11th U.S. Congressional District, I by no means would assume to tell him what he should say or not say to include comments about our President.
Dr. Mumpower has constantly stated that he is his own person, independent, conservative thinking and principle based. His statement has obviously received an enormous amount of media attention and rightly so. The Buncombe County Republican Party will continue to enthusiastically support his candidacy and believes our candidates, like Carl, bring a fresh perspective to the political landscape that includes sometimes being at odds with his own party. We do not believe in telling our candidates what to say, think, or do.
Carl served his country for the right of all of us to speak our minds, free from alienation and isolation. Surely, we don’t believe Dr. Mumpower gave that up because he is the Republican candidate for the 11th US Congress District.
My question to you is where does the other guy stand on this position?
Sincerely,
Timothy F. Johnson, PhD
Chairman,
Buncombe County Republican Party

Excellent response from Dr. Timothy Johnson to concerns expressed about Dr. Carl Mumpower’s controversial statements regarding support for impeachment of President George Bush! I am proud of you for publicly supporting our candidate’s right to free speech and thought. Dr. Mumpower is a different kind of politician…one that America is hungering for.
