During a breakfast hosted by the Buncombe County Republican Party on Saturday, Mayor Pat McCrory, candidate for Governor of North Carolina, enthusiastically expressed his willingness and interest in debating his opponent, Lt. Governor Bev Perdue, in a public, televised forum in Western North Carolina. He further conveyed his disappointment that Perdue has refused any debate in the west or any debate that will be televised statewide.
“Voters have a right to interview their candidates for Governor and hear our answers side by side so that they can compare how we stand on the issues,” McCrory stated. “My opponent refuses to debate me in Western North Carolina and that’s an insult to all the good people who live and work here.”
Dr. Timothy Johnson, Chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party, confirmed on Saturday that URTV, which broadcasts in both Buncombe and Madison County, is willing and ready to broadcast such an event as soon as both candidates agree to participate.
“Mayor Pat McCrory has made Western North Carolina a high priority in this election. We appreciate his many visits to our area and his acknowledgement of issues that are particular to the west.” Johnson said. “If his opponent won’t take Western North Carolina seriously during her campaign, she certainly won’t do so if elected.”
