Building on the arrogance displayed by the 4 Democrats on the County Commission at their August meeting, Democrat David Gannt posted a video on YouTube, which attempts to defend his viewpoint on district elections, but which says nothing about the real issue: giving the people of Buncombe County the choice of how to elect their County Commissioners.

Current Chairman, Nathan Ramsey, introduced a motion to put district elections up for a vote this November, so that beginning in 2012, the people could elect their Commissioners by district, similar to how the school boards work, if that is the will of the people. Even though many people in the community spoke in favor of this motion, the 4 Democrats, including Gannt, refused to even second the motion which would have allowed for further discussion. In fact, in a sign of their unified arrogance, they literally didn’t say a single word in response to the motion.

In his video, Gannt repeatedly states why he is opposed to district elections, ignoring entirely the true issue, which is allowing the people to decide on how they elect their own representatives. He further tried to mislead the people by basing his argument on “most areas that have district elections” and “some of the plans that have been proposed” [emphasis added].

Watch this video and ask yourself:  Do you want another 4 years of arrogant commissioners, like David Gannt, who think they know what you need better than you do? Or do you want Nathan Ramsey, along with our Republican candidates, to continue listening to and representing the people of Buncombe County?

The $700 billion Wall Street bailout bill goes to Congress for a vote today.

Read the summary here: Summary of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008

Read the full text of the bill here: H.R. 3997 - Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008

Update: As of 2pm, the House has voted AGAINST the Bailout bill by a vote of 205-228.

There has been a lot of finger pointing about the “melt down” in the financial sector with each party blaming the other for its collapse. Before anyone is too quick to blame Republicans, check out this timeline of events put together by Fox News last week:

Dr. Carl Mumpower, candidate for U.S. Congress, had this to say about the bailout proposal:

“This latest exercise in Washington’s socialistic nonsense is being sold just like every other action that undermines the Constitution and the rule of law and accountability in America,” said Mumpower.  “We are, once again, being hoodwinked into ignoring our country’s blue print with a crisis plan validated with catastrophic safety predictions.”

“I am fascinated with how readily we give up our liberties for hollow assurances of security,” noted Mumpower.  “People still keep a straight face while they defend the virtues of the Patriot Act and at the same time ignore porous borders admitting one million illegals each year.”

“Decades of big government regulatory inconsistency, inflationary monetary policy, and special interest indulgence got us into this latest financial crisis,” said Mumpower.  “These robber barons are wanting us to fund an opportunity to repeat the process.”

paul purdue candidateBuncombe County Republican Party received the following news release from the Committee to Elect Paul Purdue. Paul Purdue, candidate for NC House District 115 has consistently spoken out about the critical issues that really matter to the people of Buncombe County, and today is no different.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Paul Purdue, candidate for State House District 115 states, “We have immediate pressing needs and dangers that are NOT being addressed. What we need to do is just clean out the state house this election. Visit my website at www.purdue08.com for more valuable insights into how to improve our lives. ”

THE GAS CRISIS

“Our desperate families need emergency relief - we need to abolish the gas tax collection and remove the restrictions on formulation and other regulations which stop families, schools and businesses from getting needed gasoline and diesel fuel. We need to drill off our coast, build our own refineries and create a strategic petroleum reserve in western North Carolina.”

FORCED ANNEXATION

“This nightmare will result in a doubling of property taxes for those forcibly annexed. There is currently nothing stopping cities from destroying your family’s budget and my opponent has failed to stop this process. In fact, he supports the League of Cities responsible for this travesty.”

PROPERTY TRANSFER TAX

“Imagine every bit of equity in your home or business confiscated by the state when you sell them. This new tax has been used for years in Europe and devastated families, especially seniors approaching retirement. We must stop this money grab now before its too late.”

“Our campaign believes it is time for a change. I’m Paul Purdue and I will bring common sense to Raleigh.”

Fully one-third of the votes cast in the upcoming election will be cast at one of the 15 early voting sites in Buncombe County.  At every hour of every day at every early voting site, we Republicans need to place material in the hand of each and every voter who will take it from us. Primarily this will aid the local candidates and the judges, and to a lesser extent, the Council of State candidates. The best use of our volunteers will be to have one volunteer at each site at each time period. Each and every volunteer should have an “Alaska Gold” slate card and whatever other literature s/he wants to distribute for his/her favorite candidate(s).

We have built a spreadsheet with all the dates, times, and locations to facilitate the process of volunteering for this job. The spreadsheet can be found at www.gakeller.com/early.html.  Please stir up any Republicans you know who can work a few hours for Republican candidates. Our aim is to have every slot filled with at least one Republican.

You cannot stick names into this grid yourself. Please email to George Keller at secretary@buncombegop.org your name and the date/hour/location for which you are volunteering.  This technique worked well for the Mountain State Fair booth, and it will work well for early voting!

Over the last 3 years, Democratic Congressman Heath Shuler, who is up for re-election, has accepted over $1.2 million dollars from hundreds of Political Action Committees, a majority of which are located outside of North Carolina. Shuler has accepted an additional $1.5 million in from the NC Democratic Party.

Republican candidate for Congress, Dr. Carl Mumpower, has refused all PAC money in order to send a clear message to voters that he is a principled candidate who cannot be bought and sold. Dr. Mumpower has even refused to take money from his own party, putting “principle before party, power, or popularity.”

“When people actually take the time to look at Congressman Shuler’s record, they will learn that he has personally benefitted more from his position than the citizens of Buncombe County and the 11th District,” said Dr. Timothy Johnson, Chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party. “He is unwilling to attend political forums with Carl Mumpower in Buncombe County, unwilling to participate in an actual debate with Carl Mumpower, and unwilling to answer the many questions voters have about his voting record, including his lack of commitment to drilling off the shores of North Carolina.”

Due to increasing public concern over the strong influence of special interests in Washington D.C., Dr. Mumpower’s firm stand against taking any PAC money has inspired a solid base of volunteers of varying political affiliations to staff his campaign in order to make up for any advantage his opponent has gained from accepting special interest dollars. Support has been especially strong in Buncombe County.

Financial information for Congressman Shuler and Dr. Mumpower can be found in the Federal Election Commission database at www.fec.gov. Click here for a consolidated view of contributing PACs.

Dr. Ada FisherThis announcement was released today by Dr. Ada M. Fisher, NC Republican National Committeewoman and candidate for NC House, District 77.

St. Paul, MN – The day after the Republican National Convention, in one of many historic moves for the Republican Party, Dr. Ada M. Fisher, NC House District 77 Republican Candidate officially became her state’s Republican National Committee Woman.  That committee of over 150 representatives comprises the state’s party chairman (Linda Daves from NC),  National Committeeman (Representative David Lewis from NC) and National Committeewoman (Dr. Ada M. Fisher).  That body has some say in the functioning of the Republican Party on the national level.  It has a voice in the party platform, convention planning and efforts to elect candidates as well as fund raising efforts for races.

Preceding the convening of the first 2008-2012 Republican National Committee meeting, several historic occurrences unfolded in its wake.  The beginning of the 2008 convention was modified in view of the pending hurricane Gustav where many candidates were sent home to make sure their families were protected while the Republican Party helped raise millions of dollars to assist hurricane victims.  Retooling on September 3rd featuring a presentation by Mrs. Cindy McCain, a salute to women, first responders and those involved in our home place security was begun.  Introducing a hurricane of its own, Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska rocked the house and energized the party in her acceptance of that honor becoming the first female Republican Vice Presidential nominee.  Concluding the official events of the convention, John S. McCain in a thoughtful rousing speech highlighting his status as a true American hero, through the chants of USA appealed to the best of us across all party and ethnic lines as he implored us all to put Country First.

Likewise a historic moment for Dr. Fisher, whose grandfather rose from slavery to be instrumental in laying the groundwork for the nomination of the first black man to serve the Republican National Convention in the early 1900’s, Dr. Fisher became the first known black woman from the United States to serve as a Republican National Committee Woman.  Lost in the democratic focus of Obama as the first African American candidate to receive the democratic nomination has been the efforts of black Americans in the Republican Party with North Carolina showing unheralded successes with African Americans as a County District Chairman-Joseph Avery, County Chairman-Dr. Timothy Johnson from Ashville, and six candidates running for the NC Legislature representing Burlington, Charlotte, Gastonia, Greensboro, Fayetteville and Salisbury.
