For Immediate Release

Asheville, N.C. May 2, 2012 J.B. Howard candidate for chairman of Buncombe County Commissioners announces endorsement by former Candidate for Sherriff Dickie Green.

“I have known J.B. since our high school days at T.C. Roberson and during our law enforcement careers .J.B. is a true fiscal conservative with strong Christian family values and morals. He has a proven track record as a local business man and has solid leadership qualities we need in local county government. J.B. will be a true and honest voice representing all of the citizens of Buncombe County fairly and equal. He will be a watch-dog for the tax payers and will be an objective not a subjective leader.

Don’t confuse me with the facts, I already have my mind made up seems to be the attitude of our current County Commission Chair and I know without any hesitation that J.B. will listen and ask for citizen input before making decisions that will affect the people he will be representing.

I fully support J.B. Howard for chairman of the Buncombe County Commissioners and I encourage you to do the same”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

APRIL 29, 2012

Buncombe County Commission D-2 Candidate Christina Kelley G. Merrill favored for Election by School Board Member Elect Lisa Baldwin and the Influential Group Buncombe Forward.

“Buncombe Forward is pleased to announce it has formally endorsed Candidate Christina Kelley G. Merrill – This year will be an important election for Buncombe County voters. The current county commission has led Buncombe County into an untenable situation through years of financial mismanagement. County spending and debt have soared, while private property rights have been continuously eroded. The next commission will have very serious fiscal challenges to address. Consequently, Buncombe Forward has chosen to endorse and actively support Christina Kelley G. Merrill we believe to be the most capable and resolute in dealing with the county’s serious fiscal challenges in the years ahead. We have full faith and confidence this Candidate will have the character and resolve to see Buncombe County through these difficult times.”

Lisa Baldwin has established a reputation as an independent voice since her election to the Buncombe County School Board in 2010, she continues to press the Board and Commissioners for more fiscal responsibility and transparency.

“Please join me in supporting Christina Kelley G. Merrill for Buncombe County Commissioner in District 2. I am endorsing Christina because she is passionate and hard working. As a parent and small business owner she is genuinely concerned about the residents of our county and its future sustainability. Christina is motivated to seek out fiscally responsible solutions to difficult problems and will not “rubber stamp” away our children’s future.”

Christina Kelley G. Merrill has lived in Buncombe County for nearly 20 years She is a Small Business owner and Parent. She is running as an Advocate for Small Business and New Industry and as a Proponent of our hard working Mountain families.”

Christina Kelley G. Merrill – I am very honored to have received these endorsements and I am passionate about helping to turn our County away from the mindset of ”Spend more, Tax more, Restrict more”. We can not sustain the abundant spending of or our Tax dollars and watch our County go into over 400 Million dollars in debt, debt that will be passed on to our children. I have raised my children in our County schools, I know what it’s like to struggle, I am in touch with our Community and have a solid history of helping to grow our local Businesses. As a Marketing executive, I have also helped to raise thousands of dollars for local Charities such as, The March of Dimes, Make A Wish of WNC and The Friends of NRA. As Volunteer Commissioner and Coach for WNC youth sports, I am on the Ball Fields with our families and understand that the recession has pushed our County into poverty faster than the national average. Under the watch of our current Commission many ordinances, referendums and restrictions are hindering rather than helping and have been passed that do not reflect the interest of a large portion of our County Residents. We can not cave to the squeaky wheel and must listen to our entire County and truly represent all of our Citizens. We have not had a Conservative Female Republican elected to the Board of Commission since the late 1960′s – it is time to change that -Vote on May 8th – Christina Kelley G. Merrill, your VOICE on the Commission.

TOP LEADERS ENDORSE COUNTY CHAIR CANDIDATE GLENDA WEINERT

Asheville, NC April 25, 2012: Glenda Weinert, Republican candidate for Chair of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, announced two key endorsements today: Lou Bissette, former Mayor of the City of Asheville, and Nathan Ramsey, former Chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.

“Lou Bissette and Nathan Ramsey’s endorsements are extremely high praise and I’m sincerely honored by their confidence in me.” Weinert said. “And I’m very humbled — I take comfort in their wise counsel going forward.”

Glenda Weinert is running in the May 8 primary for the Republican nomination for County Chairman.

Weinert is a successful small businessperson with a long record of public service, including serving as the Chairman of the Board for the Irene Wortham Center, Children First of Buncombe County, President of The Junior League of Asheville, and on the boards of the NC Childcare Commission, the ABCCM, and Children’s Welfare League.

Weinert lives with her husband of 21 years, Clint Weinert, and they have two teenage sons. She is also currently an Adjunct Professor at A-B Tech, where she teaches business administration. If elected in November, Glenda will make history as the first woman to ever chair the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.

Bissette and Ramsey’s statements follow below.

Statement of Lou Bissette, former Mayor of the City of Asheville:

April 25, 2012

My friends,

I’m pleased to endorse Glenda Weinert for the Chairmanship of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. I am voting for her and I hope that you will too.

Glenda has impressed me with her depth of understanding, her compassion, and her will to do the right thing. She has proven these qualities time and again in her professional career and I am confident that she will bring these extraordinary leadership skills to bear as the next Chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.

Glenda’s got what it takes. She’ll make all of us proud.

Louis Bissette

Former Mayor of Asheville

Statement of Nathan Ramsey, former Chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners:

April 23, 2012

My friends in Buncombe County:

People to Match Our Mountains — that’s Buncombe County’s official Motto. And I can think of no one who embodies that concept in a leader more clearly than Glenda Weinert.

Glenda Weinert is uniquely qualified to lead our county government as the first woman to serve as Chair of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. I have known Glenda for many years — and I also know that she will work hard to bring our county together to solve the great challenges we face:

1) Small business is our community’s economic engine and Glenda has been a small business owner for decades; she understands what small businesses need to grow and create jobs.

2) Glenda Weinert cares deeply about children and those with special needs: she has served leadership roles in many local non-profits that serve women and children and she understands and appreciates the challenges in delivering critical human services and providing a quality education to our children.

3) Most importantly, Glenda has an eye for numbers — so she’ll insist on the efficient use of our tax dollars. In these difficult times, Glenda won’t waste your money. Glenda knows who to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Glenda Weinert isn’t a political hack — she’s never served in public office before: but frankly, I think it’s time for some new blood up there. Glenda will work with everyone in our beloved community: regardless of party, faith, or philosophy. She will help to make Buncombe County an even better place to start a business, earn an education, and raise a family.

Let’s make history this year by electing Glenda Weinert to be the first woman to chair the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. She has my unqualified endorsement and she deserves your vote.

Nathan Ramsey

Former Chairman

Buncombe County Board of Commissioners

Adults and teens in the Black Mountain, Riceville, and Swannanoa area are invited to join us at Eye Scream Parlour, 2064 U.S. Hwy 70, (across from 6 Pac Smoke Stack, near ArtSpace School) in Swannanoa for an informal “Meet the Candidates” and voter registration on Monday, April 16 anytime from 3:30 to 8:00 p.m! Candidates will be there at 7 p.m. Voter Registration forms and other voter material will be available beginning at 3:30 for high school students and others wishing to register to vote.

We will have paper maps and internet access so you can look up your address, voting district, voting site, and candidate information. We’ll have sample ballots for the May 8 Primary Election Day for your particular precinct. The only Amendment on the ballot for the May 8 Primary is the Marriage Amendment (a “yes” vote is for one woman/one man); it will not be on the Nov. ballot. Early voting begins April 19 and ends May 5.

There are 11 precincts in Eastern Buncombe County: two in Riceville (61.1- Riceville Community Center, 62.1-Grassy Branch Baptist Church), three in Swannanoa (64.1- First Baptist of Swannanoa, 65.1- W.D. Williams Elem., 66.1- Warren Wilson’s Kittredge Theater), and six in the Black Mountain area including Montreat and Ridgecrest (32.1- Owen Middle School, 33.2- Bk. Mt. Primary, 33.3- Bk. Mt. Elem., 34.1-Lakeview Senior Ctr., 35.1-Carver Comm. Ctr., 36.1-Montrt Conf. Ctr.-WalkUp).

For the first time, our area of the county elects its own county commissioner! Last year the county was divided into three districts by the N.C. Legislature to ensure widespread representation. Most Eastern Buncombe County precincts are in County District 2, corresponding to N.C. House District 115. However, all Warren–Wilson Kittredge Theater voters (Precinct 66.1) and some precinct 64.1, (First Baptist Church in Swannanoa) are in N.C. House District 114 and Buncombe County District 1.

Meet precinct workers and our new county leadership, and enjoy a slice of fabulous homemade ice cream pies created by The Eye Scream Parlour! Taste their many flavors of genuine Hershey’s ice cream, and take part in the raffle to win an ice cream pie or tote bag.

Any voter who wants to learn more about a local candidate or anyone who wants to register is invited to attend.
Understanding our economy is critical to understanding current events, and where we are heading in the future. If you would like answers to these and other questions, please join us for “Economics in One Quick Lesson,” a free seminar given by Robert Malt on Thursday, April 12.

This seminar is inspired by Henry Hazlitt’s classic book of the same name – described by F.A. Hayek as “a brilliant performance” – and explores several overlooked economic truths missing from today’s economic and political debates. Essential for newcomers to economics, this seminar will equip attendees to better understand economic policy and the importance of free markets.

The seminar will be presented free at the regular monthly meeting of the Blue Ridge Republican Women’s Club on Thursday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. Dinner ($18) begins at 6 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel in Asheville. Dinner reservations are required at gram1b@charter.net or 628-1060, if you plan to dine at the buffet before the meeting begins at 6:30.
